AI or artificial intelligence is a technology that can produce answers to questions or prompts similar to a way a human would. AI has been changing the way students learn and the way teachers teach. It has become a common school routine for many.
However, it is very easy for AI to be overly depended on by students.
Although some students use AI responsibly. Harper Cunningham, a Freshman at GHHS, stated, “Some teachers take AI away as a resource because students abuse it.”
As a matter of fact, many students cheat with AI. A study from Education Next states, “Jump forward to modern day, and recent surveys find that 95 percent of students admit to having cheated in the previous year, and 72 percent report using AI to assist with their schoolwork.” AI can take over student learning.
Yes, many teachers use AI in two main ways:
Both of these ways teachers use AI save time which ultimately saves time to focus on students and interactions in the classroom
A quote from EdWeek states, “Seventy percent of teachers worry that AI weakens critical thinking and research skills.” When students rely on AI it affects teachers two main ways.
Students and teachers agree that, “If most of your work is AI, that’s cheating.” However there are some slight differences in opinions between students and teachers.
Many students believe that using AI to help generate ideas to start your work is ok. As well as using it to “critique your own work.” on your final copy. But, many would say that relying on AI to create your whole assignment is cheating, and “researching when you are in a test.”
Most teachers would agree that using AI to create ideas and points for your first copy is cheating and that you should complete your assignment and then only maybe use AI with teacher permission if it is something like an essay you would like AI to perfect. Ms. Hunt, a freshman English teacher, believes that, “copying from AI is plagiarism.”
Personalized learning - Allows students to understand material in their own unique way.
Menial and tedious tasks like grading can be done by AI - this frees more time for teachers to focus on students
Supporting independent learning - Teaches students how to gather information on their own. This sets them up for success outside of the classroom
Taking over teacher responsibilities - With AI advancing there is a chance that AI could replace teachers.
Cost for schools - Implementing AI into classrooms can be very expensive for schools.
Ms. Hunt, a freshman English teacher, believes, “We will go back to pen and paper.”
Meanwhile, students believe, “AI will become more accessible,” to students in school. But, “kids will think less for themselves,” and become more reliant on AI.
